On the occasion of the 162nd anniversary of the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece, Corfu held a formal ceremony on May 21. This date marks the end of the British management of the Ionian islands, ending oficially in 1864.
This date is celebrated with school and military parades, and with musical performances of different philharmonic orchestras from Corfu.
City of Kruševac, as one of the Twin Cities of Corfu, was represented by the Mayor’s Aide for Ecology, Energy, and Sustainable Development Ana Prvanov.
Mayor’s Aide Prvanov attended the formal reception with other Twin City delegations, who were greeted by Mayor of Corfu, Mr. Stefanos Poulimenos. The fact that President of Greece, Mr. Constantinos Tasoulas, attended the celebrations, proves the importance of this holiday in Greece.
Mayor’s Aide Prvanov read a letter written by the Mayor of Kruševac Ivan Manojlović who congratulated the City Day to Mayor Poulimenos, emphasizing the importance of the Greek-Serbian friendship and our shared history:
Dear Mayor Poulimenos,
On behalf of the City of Kruševac, I congratulate you the 162nd anniversary of the Union of the Ionian Islands with Greece.
This date is not only a simple political act but a firm message that people who keep their tradition, culture, and identity always find their way to unity and freedom.
Both our people, Serbian and Greek, share centuries-old bond of friendship, built on mutual respect, belief, common values, and historical temptations. Serbian and Greek people have always shown harmony in the most difficult times, celebrating that which is found to be the most valuable – freedom, peace, and human dignity.
Corfu has a special place in the heart of Kruševac and Serbia, representing a symbol of friendship, humaneness, and brotherhood that will never be forgotten.
I hope that we will continue to build bridges of friendship and cooperation in the fields of culture and tourism between our cities and people.

During her stay, Mayor’s Aide Prvanov took the chance to discuss about the possibilities of further cooperation between our two cities, especially in the fields of education, culture, tourism, and other similar activities that would enhance the historical and friendly relations between the Greek and Serbian people.
Moreover, joint projects, exchange of experience and strengthening international cooperation were one of the key points through which further bonding of the two communities could be achieved.
